The  INNOAQUA project  is one of the recently funded Horizon Europe projects within the Farm-to-Fork strategy. It defines a significant milestone towards a more sustainable and diversified aquaculture industry in the European Union.

The project began on June 1, 2023 and has a duration of 48 months. Under the direction of NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, INNOAQUA brings together 17 partners from eight different countries. If you want to know more about the project, you can do so here.

It has completed its first year holding its second annual meeting in Barcelona this past June and we want to tell you here why we love participating in the project and a little more about the work we are doing and our next steps.

Our role in the project: From technology to sustainable and circular products

At Sustainn we are proud to lead Work Package 5 (WP5) of the project “Sustainability, Safety and Regulation”. This work package focuses on investigating how new technologies developed to obtain high-value food ingredients and products based on algae can be evaluated and optimized from their initial phases in terms of sustainability and circularity.

These are the key aspects we are working on:

  • Identification of Critical Parameters of Sustainability and Circularity: From the first phases of development and validation of new technologies, we work to identify the critical parameters that will influence the sustainability and circularity of the industrialization processes of ingredients and products. This early identification is crucial to ensure that technological advances are not only viable, but also beneficial from an environmental and socioeconomic perspective.
  • Impact on Industrialization and Serial Production: We analyze how these critical parameters can affect the industrialization and mass production of innovative ingredients and products. This assessment allows us to anticipate potential challenges and develop strategies to mitigate negative impacts, ensuring that final products are as sustainable and circular as possible from the start.
  • Evaluation of Circularity and Socioeconomic and Environmental Impacts: Our research also focuses on the evaluation of circularity of the developed technologies, as well as their socioeconomic and environmental impacts. This comprehensive assessment is essential to provide a clear and complete view of the benefits and challenges associated with the implementation of new technologies in aquaculture.

Next steps

This project represents for us a unique opportunity in terms of food and circularity in Europe. In the coming months we will continue to work with all project partners to ensure that the technologies developed are appropriately evaluated and optimized, and to lay the foundations for assessing sustainability and circularity of the ingredients and products developed during the project.
